Longwood Gardens is spectacular in any season, but it is transformed into a magical place during the holiday season. With more than 400,000 twinkling lights strung on nearly 40 miles of wire, this is a photographer’s paradise, and it has become an annual photo trek favorite. Join us as we make amazing images worthy of creating your own holiday cards and gifts!
We will meet at 4pm to be set up and in place as the sun sets and the magic begins. Photographing during the “Blue Hour” allows for more dramatic images. There will also be a full moon that night, which will add to foreground detail outside in the dark. We will photograph the amazing light displays outside throughout the grounds, until the need for hot chocolate takes over. We will then take a short break indoors to warm back up, let our cameras begin acclimating to the warmer indoor temperatures, review our images, then head over to the conservatory to capture the beauty and glow on the inside. (Note: the indoor cafe may have restrictions, or not be open at that time, but outdoor food and drink options will be available)
This workshop is for beginners and more advanced photo enthusiasts. No special gear is required beyond a DSLR, camera strap and tripod. A Star or Crosscreen filter would be helpful. Instruction will be given on shooting in full manual exposure; how to properly meter and photograph in low light-both outdoors and indoors; lens choice and why it matters; creative composition; HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography; and more!
This event is being scheduled on a week night to avoid the large weekend crowds. You should plan on arriving at least one half hour prior to workshop begin time to allow for traffic and parking. Please plan your schedules accordingly.
More details to follow upon registration. Cost for the event is $120 Admission to Longwood is NOT included, as most attendees choose to become members.
Upon registration you should immediately go online and reserve a timed ticket. A minimum of participants is needed to run this event. In case of inclement weather, the trek will take place on Tuesday December 8, 2020

Description
Updated Terms & Conditions – Valerie A Hoffman Photography (June 2020)
As we begin to navigate the reopening of business in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic, the following updated policies are being put in place to protect the health and wellbeing of all workshop attendees, as well as those who we will come in contact with during events.
I will be following and adhering to state and CDC mandates going forward until we are clear of the threat of spreading the virus.
That being said, here is what you need to know and comply with:
- Anyone who is sick with COVID like symptoms or has a fever over 100 degrees must not attend the event. Amount paid may be put towards a future workshop, or can be refunded in full if notice is given in advance. Suggest checking your temperature BEFORE leaving home.
- Face Masks – Must be worn when in close (5-6 foot) proximity of other participants. When you are apart from others, you may remove the mask.
- Workshop participants will be limited to a smaller than usual number
- Indoor classes will also be limited in attendance based on the venue, so participants can be seated the appropriate distance apart
*Please note that this is a fluid situation and may change based on governmental directives, CDC recommendations and legal advisement
I had never been to Longwood Gardens for Christmas before. It was absolutely beautiful!! I was able to get so many beautiful shots. Many of which will make perfect Christmas cards! Val has a very artistic eye and helps you capture some awesome photos! I would recommend this trek to anyone especially if your like me and love Christmas!
2019 was my first trip to Longwood for Christmas. I always avoided it because of the crowds but I am thrilled that I went! I was lucky and because of rain/drizzle with the threat of snow the crowds were not too bad and I came away with some awesome images. Val had great insight on different vantage points for compositions that you might not typically see. Very inspiring trek.
