SUMMARY:National Christmas Center Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy treasures from Christmas past at The National Christmas Center! \nThe original National Christmas Center of Paradise officially closed its doors in January of 2018. For over 19 years\, this beloved tourist destination shared the magic of Christmas\, both religious and secular\, its history\, memories and traditions with thousands of visitors. After a search for someone who could purchase the center’s collections and keep the spirit of Christmas alive\, the search ended when Stone Gables Estate purchased the entire Christmas collection. This collection is one of the largest collections of historical Christmas memorabilia in the United States. \nUntil its permanent home is ready\, visitors can now enjoy over 18\,000+ square feet of nostalgic Christmas décor in lights\, trees\, stores\, and renowned artifacts at the National Christmas Center which is housed a short distance from Stone Gables Estate. Seventeen-foot-tall\, real-life buildings with artistic architectural features depict the streets of Columbia\, Pennsylvania as they were in the 1950s. Featured storefronts include a walk-in Woolworth’s Store\, a Boy’s Toy Store\, a Girl’s Toy Store\, the Sweet Shoppe featuring Klein Chocolates\, Miesse Candies\, Byers Bakery\, and much more! \nPeer in the windows of shops which include Joe – The Motorists’ Friend\, Eichhorn’s Store for Men\, Watt\, and Shand\, Dave Barton’s Barbershop\, The Train Store\, and more! \nOld favorites such as the animated Tudor Towne which tells the story of forgiveness\, a “choir” of over 900 Gurley candles\, Pennsylvania handmade Byers’ Choice carolers\, Santa’s from around the world\, over 1\,000 nativities from around the world depicted in their native culture\, and much more will bring back many nostalgic memories and joys of childhood gone by. \nNew to the National Christmas Center collection is the Toy Soldier store with over 5\,000 hand-painted soldiers as part of the world’s finest collection of brass and wood models including ships\, planes\, trains\, and automobiles. Also new to the National Christmas Center collection is Anastasia’s Doll Emporium\, a collection of the finest dolls and dollhouses around the world. Antiques such as Santa’s\, scales\, popcorn machines\, barber chairs\, and more will bring back fond memories. \nAnother must-see on display is a world-class builder’s model of the Titanic in the Titanic Museum. The Titanic model is 22 feet long\, 9 feet tall\, and weighs 5\,500 lbs. It has eight miles of fiber optic lighting and was constructed according to the original plans of the original Titanic ship. This is a one-of-a-kind display with original plans and photos. (from their website) \nThere are so many wonderful things to see and photograph here at the new museum! It was a thrill to wander the new displays in preparation for this workshop\, and I’m looking forward to bringing a group here for the first time to photograph all the treasures of Christmas and more that the museum holds! \nYou will spend your time capturing great images of the displays with a variety of lenses\, using a variety of techniques and exposure settings. Emphasis will be on creative compositions\, and capturing all the detail in semi-challenging light. There will be a pre-trek class via Zoom to go over all the details\, with tons of images and shooting tips and techniques. Hands on instruction will continue during our visit. An image review to further the learning process will take place soon after the event\, also via Zoom. A detailed email will be sent a few weeks prior to the event. \nA minimum number of participants is needed to run this workshop. Space is limited\, so register today. \nRegistration fee covers the cost to enter the museum. \nAddress for the National Christmas Center: 3950 East Harrisburg Pike\, Middletown\, PA 17057. \nUSE THIS ADDRESS-DO NOT GOOGLE IT! \nBelow are just a few of the many options from the 49+ displays!

SUMMARY:The Mill at Anselma Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Nestled along Pickering Creek in Chester Springs\, Pennsylvania\, the Mill at Anselma is an extraordinary historic site demonstrating over 250 years of Chester County’s industrial history. The 22-acre property and surviving historical buildings demonstrate a heritage engineered to last. \nThe Mill retains its original Colonial-Era power train and multiple layers of industrial equipment ranging from the late 1700s to the mid-1900s. The Mill at Anselma is the last custom grain mill in America that can still produce a product with its original wooden engineering. \nJoin me as we spend several hours photographing this historic mill complex. The creative possibilities are overflowing. Instruction will be given on creative composition\, creative exposure settings and how to best capture the high dynamic range light\, how to use artificial light to fill in shadows and more! \nWe will begin with a pre-trek class via Zoom\, to go over all the details along with shooting tips and techniques. Hands-on instruction will continue throughout the workshop. Afterwards\, there will be an image review held via Zoom where the learning will continue as we go through composition\, exposure settings etc and discuss any ways images might have been improved. \nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Historic Bowmansville Roller Mill Photo workshop
DESCRIPTION:In the 1700 and 1800s\, Lancaster County was an important milling center due to the availability of water power along our many streams. The Bowmansville Roller Mill is an important example of this industry. It provided the farmers in this area with both animal feed and flour. It is the last remaining example of a combination of grist and sawmills in Brecknock Township. Machinery from the 1850 grist mill and the 1888 roller mill are fully intact. It is the only known mill in the area to have both still. \nThe mill contains examples of three centuries of milling techniques: the millstones\, the roller mills\, and the sawmill. There are four sets of millstones. These stones were used for corn and wheat. \nThe Bowmansville Roller Mill was both a custom and a commercial mill. Some of the farmers had their grain milled and returned to them. However\, other loads of grain were purchased by the Von Niedas\, milled\, and bagged. These large bags of flour or feed were then bought by farmers and other people in the area as needed. When the water level in the millrace was high and the harvest was plentiful\, the mill ran almost continuously. During the three or four months of harvest\, the farmers brought their grain to the mill by the wagon load. There the grain was loaded into barrels and lifted by pulley to the assigned compartment\, or storage bin\, on the upper levels of the mill. Several days later\, the farmers returned to the mill for their grain. \nThe Bowmansville Roller Mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987\, which recognized the preservation efforts of former owner Stewart Kean\, who restored the mill with local men. (information taken from Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County article) \nJoin me as part of the first ever photography workshop at the mill! You will love the images you create as you photographically explore all four floors of this gorgeous mill. There will be a zoom session on Wednesday September 18th to go through all important details of the event. Instruction will be given on creative composition\, exposure settings and how to handle high dynamic range lighting. We will also use artificial lighting where needed to open up shadows and control contrast in your scene. \nAn informational email will be sent about a week prior to the on location workshop with gear suggestions\, and all other details for the event. A participant image review will follow via zoom the following week. Registration includes entrance to the mill\, both zoom sessions\, and hands-on instruction throughout our time at the mill. \n

SUMMARY:Architectural Photography Trek_Bryn Athyn Historic District_SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:This event is now sold out! Please contact me to be put on a Wait List or first to hear about another trip \n“Bryn Athyn\, Pennsylvania\, was founded as a religious community in the late 19th century by members of a Christian denomination known as the New Church. Just a mile from the Philadelphia border\, this small borough is home to some of the area’s most remarkable architecture\, buildings that reflect the religious faith and vision of the community’s earliest residents. \nThe Bryn Athyn Historic District includes three family residences—father John Pitcairn’s Beaux-Arts mansion\, Cairnwood\, and sons Harold and Raymond’s residences\, Cairncrest and Glencairn\, respectively—and the renowned Bryn Athyn Cathedral. All were constructed between 1892 and 1938. The Bryn Athyn Historic District was designated as a National Historic Landmark on October 6\, 2008.” (from their website) \nFor this event\, we will photograph in two of the three historical and beautiful architectural wonders (Cairnwood is currently undergoing renovations). Join us for an afternoon of photography on our private tours of both the Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn Museum. Participants will have the opportunity to photograph the beautiful grounds as well as interiors. For the museum\, we will have private access to the amazing architecture of the first floor\, as well as views from the limited access tower! \nPrior to the workshop\, there will be a class via Zoom\, where we will review images from areas we will photograph in\, and go through details on how to best capture the architectural details. SUMMARY:Lake Tobias Wildlife Safari
DESCRIPTION:For those who love wildlife and dream of going on a photo safari\, we have a great new Trek for you! \nFor over 50 years\, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park has been fascinating visitors with its wild\, exotic animals and adventure safaris. Nestled in the quiet country-side\, Lake Tobias resounds with the sights and sounds of the jungles and grasslands of six continents. Mammals\, reptiles and birds from around the world can be found here. Monkeys\, tigers\, ostriches and many other exciting creatures are presented in a zoo-type setting. \nThe safari tours are the main attraction\, and the primary focus of our photo trek. Open-air cruisers take you across 150 acres of rolling hills where you see herds of wild and exotic animals from around the world. Tour guides travel with you through pasture land and wooded areas sharing information on the various species and their habitats. There are more than 400 animals in the safari fields\, all roaming freely. This changing landscape makes each visit unique. Even multiple tours on the same day will offer different photographic opportunities as the animals move about. You will be amazed at how close you come to these animals! Many will stroll right beside our tour bus\, allowing guests to touch and feed them-making for some fantastic photo opportunities! Animals are in such close proximity to the vehicle that a standard telephoto in the range of 18-200  will give good coverage for all displays throughout the day. There is also a reptile and exotic animal facility\, where you will find large\, custom-designed habitats housing snakes\, lizards\, amphibians\, tropical birds\, a sloth\, lemurs and my personal favorites-Tamarins and Marmosets. A macro lens or 50mm would be great for the low-light inside. \nInstruction will be given on how to best capture the animals\, with emphasis placed on composition\, exposure and lighting. Workshop is suitable for all levels of photo enthusiasts\, and any camera gear you own. Information will be emailed to participants in advance to help with gear choice and other important information. We will also have a pre-trek class via Zoom\, to review all the details of the trek-including images taken on location\, all shooting info\, gear used\, etc. This will enable participants to be fully prepared to start capturing amazing images from the moment we see our first animals and onward. \nThe photo trek will run from 10am-3:00pm with a break for lunch. There are numerous pavilions where you can enjoy your own packed lunch\, or purchase food at a variety of stations. Food lines tend to get long\, so packing a picnic lunch is recommended. \nCost is $179. Fee for this workshop includes pre-trek zoom class\, a post trek image review\, admission to the park and tickets for two different safari rides-enabling the group more opportunities to see and photograph the animals on the tour\, and\, membership in our private Facebook group where you share and view images from other workshop participants\, and gain encouraging feedback and continued learning opportunities. \nTransportation to and from the park\, as well as any food or beverage purchases is not included. \nLake Tobias Wildlife Park is located about 25 miles north of Harrisburg and four miles north of Halifax\, just off Route 225. Address: 760 Tobias Rd\, Halifax\, PA \nPlease note that the safari ride can be VERY BUMMPY at times. If you have a bad back or other physical issues that a ride like this could further aggravate\, this may not be in your best interest at this time. (In case of heavy rain or storms\, the trek will be rescheduled to a future Saturday most conducive to the majority of the group.)

SUMMARY:Bill's Old Bike Bark Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:“In the wooded grove\, on the hill just behind Bill’s Custom Cycles…the parts shop\, Bill worked to make his dream materialize. Nestled there you will find his museum\, Bill’s Old Bike Barn\, a true collection of vintage motorcycles and Americana memorabilia. \nAt a glance\, the green metal pole barn appears to be a storage building constructed to house equipment for the long harsh winter. Stepping over the threshold you are in yesteryear. First thoughts are\, “Not in your wildest dreams!” \nBill Morris began to fulfill his life long dream and established Bill’s Old Bike Barn in 1998. Years later we have close to 200 amazing vintage motorcycles in a 55\,000 square ft building filled with some of the most extraordinary antiques from all around the world. The museum is in a constant state of evolution as new items and collections are added regularly.” (from Bill’s website) \nWhen I first visited Bill’s Old Bike Barn\, I immediately stood in aw at the amazing collection\, almost secretly hidden inside this nondescript building. The sheer size of the place is one thing\, but the amazing contents are beyond words! You could easily spend several full days exploring all that Bill has collected through the years. My favorite part is “Billville”\, the street of shops he has created that house displays of anything and everything. There is even a camera store with the largest view camera you may ever see(I think he told me it took 4 of them to get it in there!) and several models of cameras I had never even seen or even heard of before! \nThis will be a truly fun photographic adventure! Using whatever gear you have\, you will learn to create unique and compelling images of some of one of the most interesting collections of Americana to be found! We will have a pre-trek class via zoom to go over all the details for the event\, including pertinent shooting info and gear choices. A group image review will be held shortly after the event\, for participants to share their favorite images\, and get more feedback on composition and editing. Through the pre-trek class and during the event\, instruction will be given on creative composition\, lens choice and how perspective completely changes your scene\, how to deal with the challenges of low light\, as well as high dynamic range scenes. Join as we embark on a creative photographic journey into the past\, and come away with stories and images you will love! \nA few weeks prior to the event\, you will receive an email with all the details. Don’t wait! Register to join us today! \nCheck out these virtual tours of the place! https://www.billsbikebarn.com/billsbik-VirtualTours-30.htm \nPlease note: there will also be a waterfall photo trek the day before at Ricketts Glen state park. If interested in staying up in the area and joining us for both\, contact me for hotel suggestions.

SUMMARY:Spring Waterfall Trek at Ricketts Glen
DESCRIPTION:Ricketts Glen State Park is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania\, encompassing more than 13\,000 acres in Luzerne\, Sullivan and Columbia continues. It is also a premiere place to hike and photograph waterfalls! \nThe Falls Trail is a 3 1/2 to 7 mile trail through the Glens Natural Area\, a National Natural Landmark. The trail boasts a series of wild\, free-flowing waterfalls-the tallest of which is the 94-foot Gangoga Falls. There are 22 named waterfalls along the trail\, and countless gorgeous cascades along the stream in between. The area is an absolute treasure and a favorite destination of those who love photographing the stunning beauty waterfalls. The falls pictured here are a small sample of those along the trail-but necessarily all that will be seen on our trek. \nDue to the moderate difficulty of the trail\, and the desire to make this trek accessible to most levels of physical ability\, we will only be covering approximately half of the trail. How we proceed will depend on the level of fitness of the group as a whole. One additional falls lies near the entrance to the lower portion of the trail\, and is a must-see. \nMinimal gear is required. Workshop participants can use a variety of lenses and focal lengths – the best ranging from super-wide to mid-range telephoto. Circular polarizers\, lens hoods and a sturdy tripod along with several lens cloths\, spare batteries\, and a cable release are the primary pieces of necessary gear. Neutral density filters to slow the flow of the water are also highly recommended. Participants should be able to walk at least 3-5 miles over sometimes slippery and rocky\, root-covered terrain. Our pace will be slow and easy\, as determined by the physical level of the group. Sturdy hiking boots-preferably waterproof\, must be worn. Absolutely no sandals or sneakers-both of which would be hazardous to hike on along this trail. We also recommend using at least one hiking pole to help ensure hiking safety. \nA detailed email with a complete list of recommended gear and suggested personal items will be sent prior to the trek\, to help participants prepare. SUMMARY:Spring Beauty @ Hershey Gardens Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Hershey Gardens is one of those “off the radar” places for many photographers\, but that’s certainly not for lack of beauty and photographic opportunities. Visiting during many different seasons\, there is always a quiet beauty that awaits your wandering. \nI absolutely love photographing in the spring\, and Hershey offers a ton of gorgeous plantings-including rows and rows of tulips\, that are perfect for quite a few hours of photography. The focus of this workshop will been on capturing the delicate beauty of the flowers. This is most easily done with a macro lens\, but can certainly be accomplished with other lenses\, as well. Hands-on instruction will be given on how to create stunning flower portraits\, focusing in on the soft and unique details of each flower. \nThere will also be plenty of opportunities to make amazing images of larger plantings and scenes as we wander pathways lined with beautiful bushes and trees in bloom. An added bonus will be to spend some time in the butterfly house\, capturing the delicate beauty of a variety of these lovely creatures. \nOf course\, another added bonus is the close proximity to Chocolate World-which for you chocolate lovers\, is right across the street! 😁 \nIf you are looking to learn macro photography\, or improve your current skill level\, then this workshop is for you! This is also for anyone looking for new opportunities to capture beautiful scenes in a very scenic environment. Open to all skill levels. Minimal gear required. We can work with whatever gear you have. A detailed list of suggested gear-such as a sturdy tripod that can go low to the ground\, circular polarizers and lens hoods for each lens\, and close up accessories if you do not have a macro lens are recommended. \nA pre-trek class will be held about a week prior to the workshop via Zoom to go through all the details of the trip\, and lots of shooting tips and techniques to get you ready. We will then meet at the gardens by opening time\, ready to roll! After the event\, there will be an image review\, also via Zoom\, where we will discuss tips to improve your images. Join us for this unique learning opportunity during the beauty of spring. \nParticipants kept to a small amount to allow for more one on one instruction. Don’t wait to register! A minimum number of participants is required to run the event. \nWorkshop will take place during a light rain. If severe weather is forecast\, we will reschedule to the following Saturday

SUMMARY:A Longwood Christmas Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Longwood Gardens is spectacular in any season\, but it is transformed into a magical place during the holiday season. With more than 400\,000 twinkling lights strung on nearly 40 miles of wire\, this is a photographer’s paradise\, and it has become an annual photo trek favorite. Join us as we make amazing images worthy of creating your own holiday cards and gifts! \nWe will meet at 4pm to ensure we are inside before the worst of the evening traffic\, and to be set up and in place as the sun sets and the magic begins. We will continue photographing during the “Blue Hour”\, which allows for more dramatic images. We will photograph the amazing light displays outside throughout the grounds\, until the need for hot chocolate takes over. We will then take a short break indoors to warm back up\, let our cameras begin acclimating to the warmer indoor temperatures\, review our images\, then head over to the conservatory to capture the beauty and glow on the inside-IF the crowds are not unbearable. If it is mobbed\, we will continue to photograph outside. \nThis workshop is for beginners and more advanced photo enthusiasts. No special gear is required beyond a DSLR\, camera strap and tripod(for outside). A Star filter would be helpful for creative affects of the lights. Fast Lenses\, with apertures such as f/2.8 or 1.8 will be a huge benefit in the conservatory\, and to create those beautiful Bokeh light effects.. \nA pre-trek class will be held via Zoom to go over all the details.Instruction will be given on shooting in full manual exposure\, how to properly meter and photograph in low light-both outdoors and indoors\, lens choice and why it matters; creative composition; HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography; and more! A detailed email will be sent prior to the Zoom session detailing everything you need to get ready. A post-trek image review also via Zoom is included in the registration cost. \nThis event is being scheduled on a week night to avoid the large weekend crowds. You should plan on arriving at least one half hour prior to workshop start time to allow for traffic and parking. Please plan your schedules accordingly. \nAdmission to Longwood is NOT included\, as most attendees either are-or choose to become members of the gardens. Upon registration you should immediately go online and reserve a timed ticket. \nA minimum number of participants is needed to run this event. The number of tickets shown on website does not necessarily reflect the number still available\, as some participants choose to pay using Venmo or Cash app as opposed to PayPal. \nIn case of hazardous weather\, the trek will take place on Wednesday December 20th\, 2023. The workshop will take place in light rain or snow\, as these are fantastic conditions for photographing holiday lights. \nPlease note: the images below were taken over several different years and visits to Longwood. These are all past displays and do not represent what the current displays will look like.

SUMMARY:NJ Night Skies Weekend Adventure Trek - NEW DATE_Round 3!
DESCRIPTION:  \nHave you ever looked up at the night sky\, and wished you could capture stunning images of the stars? \nAstro photography is a fascinating and fun photographic venture. But it can also be extremely challenging. Knowing where to go and when\, what gear to bring\, and being able to see\, focus\, and change camera settings in the dark can be intimidating and frustrating to a beginner. But\, capturing great images of the night skies is easier than you think! You just need a few key pieces of gear\, and a good understanding of some basic camera settings\, and you are off to discovering a whole new world! \nJoin us for our first-ever Night Skies photography workshop in South Jersey\, where we plan on photographing the stars\, star trails and Milky Way above 3 different lighthouses and a WW1 military bunker! (plans are subject to change). We will be fully immersed in shooting and editing images from Friday night until Sunday afternoon! (with maybe a little time off to sleep:) \nThe workshop begins on Friday September 15th at 4pm\, but there will be a pre-trek class being held via Zoom on Wednesday September 6th(new date) at 6:30pm. During the class we will review everything you need to know to come away with great images\, including what gear to bring\, what settings to use for a variety of shooting scenarios\, where we’ll go\, what we’ll see\, how to edit images for best results and more! \nWe can work with whatever gear you have\, but\, a camera that can be set fully manually (both exposure and focus) and handles noise well\, a sturdy tripod and a fast wide angle lens will give the best results. Your camera needs to have the ability to shoot at an ISO as high as 6400 or higher for best results \nThere will be hands-on\, detailed instruction given throughout the event\, but photographer’s should come with a good understanding of how to use their own camera\, and be able to change aperture\, shutter speeds\, ISO and focus without struggle. Although we will make as many settings as we can before heading out\, the majority of the time you will be operating your gear in the dark(with the help of a faint flashlight\, and you should be comfortable doing so. You should also be comfortable with being out -with the group\, for up to 4 hours or more in the dark\, potentially in chilly weather. This date was chosen to coincide with a New Moon\, so the moon’s brightness will not adversely affect the visibility of the stars. Timing was also chosen to capture the Milky Way in its early phase\, low to the horizon. Note\, the Milky Way Core-which is the brightest part of the MW\, does not rise until after 2am.🥺 \nWe will be out photographing as long as the conditions are suitable and the group has energy\, then return to our hotel for much needed rest. We will sleep in and rest until at least lunchtime\, and are not currently planning on photographing any sunrises-unless we are still out:) We will try our best to capture sunset on both Friday and Saturday night. \nHotel suggestions will be given upon registration. Hotel and meals are not included in the cost of the workshop. We are planning on carpooling together to locations. Passengers should come prepared to share gas expenses with their driver. \nWe will still be out shooting even if it is cloudy\, but will reschedule if high threat of rain. \nSpace is limited\, and will likely sell out. If you are interested in joining us\, don’t wait to register! A detailed informational email will be sent upon registration to help you prepare. Register ASAP to get group pricing on hotel rooms. \nNote: This event was rescheduled from past dates due to bad weather. Only 3 spots remain!!!

A super wide angle to mid-range lens would work best for the boardwalk and amusement rides. \nFull details will be given several weeks prior to the event. This will include lodging suggestions for those that may be traveling from several hours away. If interested in staying overnight\, you should secure a hotel as soon as possible \nA pre-trek class will take place via Zoom prior to the event to go through all the details for the day. SUMMARY:Longwood Christmas Photo Trek
We will then take a short break indoors to warm back up\, let our cameras begin acclimating to the warmer indoor temperatures\, review our images\, then head over to the conservatory to capture the beauty and glow on the inside\, as time allows. \nTripods are not allowed inside at this time\, so this will be a great time to get comfortable with photographing at high ISOs and perfect your hand-holding skills in low light. \nThis workshop is for beginners and more advanced photo enthusiasts. No special gear is required beyond a DSLR\, camera strap and tripod(for outside). A Star filter would be helpful for creative affects of the lights. Fast Lenses\, with apertures such as f/2.8 or 1.8 will be a huge benefit in the conservatory. \nInstruction will be given on shooting in full manual exposure\, how to properly meter and photograph in low light-both outdoors and indoors\, lens choice and why it matters; creative composition; HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography; and more! More details to follow several weeks prior to the event. \nUpon registration you should immediately go online and reserve a timed ticket. A minimum of participants is needed to run this event. In case of hazardous weather\, the trek will take place on Thursday December 15\, 2022. The workshop will take place in light rain or snow.

SUMMARY:Pennhurst Asylum Photo Trek-Multiple Buildings!! -
DESCRIPTION:Pennhurst was an institution for mentally and physically disabled individuals of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Constructed and opened in 1908 as a state school for the mentally and physically disabled\, Pennhurst’s property was vast\, covering 120 acres. Created to house over 10\,000 patients\, Pennhurst was one of the largest institutions of its kind in Pennsylvania. It was devoted strictly to the care\, treatment and education of the disabled. Originally named Pennhurst Home for the Feeble Minded and Epileptic\, it finally was just called Pennhurst State School. \nAfter a decade of controversy\, it closed on December 9\, 1987. Pennhurst fell into complete ruin as the complex was shut down. Buildings were abandoned as they were\, with patient’s clothes and belongings strewn about. Furniture\, cabinets and medical equipment were left to decay as if someone had just got up and walked out the front door. This is the place that will eventually resurrect into one of the most studied properties in the ghost hunter media\, and will become an amazing haunted attraction. The history is as fascinating as it is sad. \nJoin us as we photographically explore this remarkable and erie place! We will have access to the Mayflower building and the newly reopened Devon building! 3 buildings are now open to tour and photograph\, but due to time constraints\, we will focus on these two\, as they offer the most photographic opportunities!!! . \nA brief history will be given at the start of the tour\, then we will be free to photographically explore. The group will work through the two different buildings together\, but will have more than enough room so as not to interfere with other participant’s images. \nAn overview and instruction will be given on creative composition\, exposure\, flash\, HDR photography\, light painting and more\, enabling you to be fully prepared and able to come away with creative images that truly capture the essence of the place. \nA mandatory pre-trek Zoom class will take place a few days prior to the event to answer any questions\, get everyone inspired\, acquainted and comfortable with recommended settings\, gear and what to expect throughout the day. \nA full list of details will be emailed several weeks prior to the event. This workshop is suitable for all levels of photo enthusiasts\, but being familiar with the settings on your camera is highly recommended. You will be shooting in many areas with low light levels\, therefore it is important to be familiar with the operations of your camera. Anyone who is concerned about their level of understanding of their gear should consider scheduling a private lesson with Valerie prior to the event. \nPhysically\, you need to be able to be on your feet and move up and down several flights of stairs for up to five hours. The buildings are not heated or air conditioned\, and are in a state of arrested decay. You will be walking through areas of dirt\, dust\, and some potential hazards\, etc. Liability waivers will need to be signed for both Pennhurst and Valerie A Hoffman Photography. \nWorkshop fee includes instruction before and during the workshop\, tour and access to the buildings and grounds-as permitted by Pennhurst. Also included is an image review via zoom following the trek\, and access to our private FB group\, where you will be able to see what others in the group photographed\, share your own and receive feedback on images. A great way to continue the learning process! Alumni from the April trek should contact me directly for a discounted rate. \nPennhurst is located at: 250 Commonwealth Dr\, Spring City\, PA 19475

SUMMARY:Abandoned JW Cooper School Photo Trek-SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:The J.W. Cooper school\, located in the coal mining town of Shenandoah\, PA\, was built in 1918. In the 1920s and 1930s\, Shenandoah had a population of approximately 30\,000 residents. Before opening as the Shenandoah High School\, it was commandeered during the Spanish flu epidemic and used as a temporary hospital and morgue\, since the local hospital was overrun by the large number of victims. In May of 1919\, the building was dedicated as the “new Shenandoah High School. It was later renamed the J.W. Cooper High School after the School’s first principal. The school later became an elementary school prior to its closing in 1994. There have been several owners since that time\, with little work happening to restore the structure. In the late 2000s\, a local business owner stepped in to try to save this historic building that was once the home to tens of thousands of students. The new owner immediately got to work removing tons of trash and making the structure safe to enter. His goal is to use the building as a mixed use facility for local businesses\, and revive the theatre to once again hold performances. A portion of the registration fee will go towards helping in the restoration effort. \n\n\n\nThe Cooper school is currently in a state of arrested decay. The gymnasium\, with hoops and basketballs and old wooden floor is a neat place to photograph\, as are the many school rooms with memorabilia scattered about. The decaying pool area is an interesting place to explore and photograph\, as are the many side rooms that contain theatre props\, desks\, books and more. The auditorium is by far the coolest place to creatively explore\, with the stage and most of the seats still in tact. The room takes on an eerie green glow from the light bouncing about from the unlit ceiling and walls. There is also a balcony to give even more opportunities for a truly unique abandoned photography adventure. \n\n\n\nThe school has 4 floors and is not handicap accessible. You will be wandering through areas covered in various states of dirt and debris. Caution will need to be taken as you explore. We will have 4 hours to wander the property. A brief tour will be given at the start\, which will also detail any areas that may be unsafe or off limits. Participants must adhere to any and all instructions given by the owner. \n\n\n\nThis will be a 3 part workshop. Part one will be an informational Zoom class on either October 5th. The trek itself will run from 10am-2pm. Following will be an hour long editing class held via Zoom. More details will be given through email a few weeks prior to the event. \n\n\n\nA minimum number of participants is needed to run this event. If for some reason we would need to cancel\, money will be put towards a future event. \n\n\n\nTransportation to JW Cooper School is not included. We will meet at the school. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Abandoned Historic Pump House In Northern New Jersey
DESCRIPTION:A peculiar pump house rests in a discrete setting along the Delaware River in Phillipsburg\, New Jersey.\n\nIn 1885\, the People’s Water Company incorporated and designed a system that pumped water from wells and into a raised reservoir. The pump house in Phillipsburg was the source of this People’s Water Company system.\nThe pump house’s reinforced concrete housing holds a remarkable 51-foot tall water pumping apparatus\, also known as Big Alice. Big Alice is a 300-horse power\, vertical\, triple-expansion\, coal-fired\, steam-powered engine manufactured by Allis Chalmers of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. At the peak of pump house operations\, Big Alice pushed 6 million gallons of water each day from its wells to a reservoir on nearby Marble Mountain as it served the Phillipsburg community.\nThe pumping station was operational until 1969\, when a new well system of submerged electric pumps went operational…\n\n\nThe pump house is now under the caring hands of the Friends of the New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. The heritage center also utilizes the pump house as a storage facility \, and what is stored within the walls is an unexpected wealth of fascinating artifacts\, especially to an urban explorer’s eye. Inside and outside the pump house are mostly New Jersey transportation-related signs\, lampposts\, spare parts\, rail sections\, and vehicles\, retained for a future Heritage Center museum.\n\n\nWhile the pump house stood for decades like a silent reminder of Phillipsburg’s industrial past\, in 2018\, the Friends of the New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center completed the restoration of the steam-powered engine. The triple-expansion steam engine now asserts operational status and is the largest working standing steam engine in North America. (history and description of the pump house was taken from Cindy Vasko’s book\, “Abandoned Northern New Jersey”\, Homage To Lost Dreams. Used with the author’s permission. Follow her on Instagram:@cindyvasko_photography. I highly recommend all of her many abandoned series of books!)\n\n\n\n\nJoin me as we make a trip back in time\, with private access to photographically explore this amazing pump house and property. 4 hours will fly by as you find unique compositions of Big Alice\, and all of the amazing artifacts scattered about. There is also an abandoned bus\, and house on the property that are open to be carefully explored. Registration number will be kept small to allow the opportunity for participants to get images without other people in their shots.\n\n\nInstruction will be given during a pre-trek class(via Zoom)\, and throughout the extent of the workshop\,  on composition\, exposure\, overcoming the lighting challenges\, gear and more. An image review of participant images will follow shortly after the Trek.\nRegistration all includes participation in a private Facebook group where you will be able to see other participant’s images and continue the learning process in a fun and friendly community.\n\nComplete details will be email prior to the event

SUMMARY:Gruber Wagon Works Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:The Gruber Wagon Works survives as one of the most complete examples of an integrated rural manufactory of its kind in the nation. Erected in 1882 by Franklin H. Gruber\, the wagon works evolved from a single craftsman shop\, having a variety of specialized hand tools\, into a family-operated business which employed up to 20 men who utilized mass-production methods. Unlike a modern assembly process\, wagon parts were transported back and forth between various rooms in order to complete a segment of the work. \nWagon wheels were constructed in the bench shop\, and wooden parts of the wagon were made from patterns in the wood shop. Wheels were “tired” and wagons were “ironed” and assembled in the blacksmith shop. The distinctive striping and scrollwork were applied by hand in the paint shop. \nDuring the winter of 1976-77\, the Gruber Wagon Works was moved by the Army Corps of Engineers from its original location near Mt. Pleasant. In 1978\, the Gruber Wagon Works was designated as a National Historical Landmark by the United States Government\, commemorating its historic significance as an industry from a bygone era of American craftsman. \nJoin us for a fantastic photography workshop in this amazing place! We will have private access to the Wagon Works for 4 hours! Come early and explore the other buildings which make up the Berks Heritage Center. This includes the Wertz’s Covered Bridge\, a hidden cemetery with 100 year old tombstones\, the very colorful Der Distelfink statue and more! \nYou’ll have fun photographing and exploring two full floors of vintage wagons and all the tools and textiles that went along with working on them. There is a great collection of vintage wheels\, tools\, paint cans\, work benches and much more! You’ll learn to create more compelling compositions\, work with contrasty light\, use exposure bracketing to create a series of images that can later be merged into HDR or Hi Dynamic Range images. Some models offer this feature in-camera \, so we can work on gaining a better understanding of that feature\, as well. This is a great opportunity to learn in a fun and friendly environment! \nTicket fee includes a pre-trek Zoom class\, private access to the Wagon Works\, instruction throughout the workshop\, follow up and access to our private Facebook group. \nWorkshop is great for all levels of photo enthusiasts! An email will be sent prior to the event with details on the pre-trek Zoom class\, what to bring and what to expect. This is a smaller venue\, so registration will be kept to a smaller number. So don’t wait-register today!

SUMMARY:Landscape Photography Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Usually at this time of year\, we have a great macro photography event at Longwood Gardens during their annual Orchid Extravaganza. This year the Orchid Event did not take place for a variety of reasons due to the on-going pandemic. In addition\, the new “No Tripods Indoors COVID Policy” would make a macro photography event that much more challenging-if not impossible. BUT\, I’m really tired of the cold\, gray days of winter\, and am ready to focus on spring! I know many of you are right there with me\, so… we’re mixing it up a little. Instead of focusing on the intimate tiny details of flowers\, we will instead focus on the bigger picture-the amazing overall beauty of the gardens\, capturing the grand landscape. INDOORS. In the warmth\, surrounded by the beauty of spring flowers. \n\n\n\nInstruction will be given on how to best capture beautiful images that include drama and depth. We will discuss the impact aperture choice and depth of field have on your images\, how and where to focus within the scene\, creative composition\, controlling exposure-especially in harsh lighting situations\, using filters for greater impact and color depth\, and so much more. You won’t want to miss this new opportunity! \n\n\n\nDue to COVID policies and out of an abundance of caution\, the number of participants will be limited. Also\, in order to help facilitate the learning process while social distancing\, there will be a pre-trek class held on Zoom\, approximately one week prior to the event. During the class we will go through recommended gear and how to properly use it to enhance your images. We will also review a variety of images to help inspire and get your creative juices flowing\, while teaching important techniques on lens choice\, composition\, exposure\, depth of field and more. Several creative techniques will also be demonstrated\, such as creating great bokeh backgrounds\, in camera multiple exposures\, zoom bursts\, shoot-thrus\, exposure bracketing\, and more-all without the use of a tripod! This class will be recorded and available to if class date does not coincide with your schedule. \n\n\n\nThis trek will be great for beginners as well as more advanced photo enthusiasts. A prior understanding of your camera will be helpful\, as this will not be a specific lesson on any one camera but on appropriate settings which all cameras that are able to be set manually will have. \n\n\n\nSince having Timed Tickets IN ADVANCE is the only way to gain access to the gardens\, and due to the limited amount of spots available on this workshop\, it is highly recommended that you sign up as soon as possible in order to get your ticket at the time the group will be entering\, and to reserve your spot.
