SUMMARY:Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles houses dozens of automobiles\, trucks\, and motorcycles that were manufactured right here in Pennsylvania while the industry was still in its infancy. Prior to that time\, the region produced multitudes of horse-drawn vehicles\, of which many examples can be found at the Museum. \nWe’ll take a photographic tour through both the auto museum\, and the recently opened Carriage Museum. \n  \nIf you are looking for a fun way to spend several hours learning to creatively photograph a huge variety of historic cars\, trucks\, bicycles\, carriages\, wagons and more-then this trek is for you! A highlight will be the old Sunoco station and Fegley’s old-time diner. \nYou will learn how to photograph in low light situations\, use fill and bounce flash to supplement the lighting\, and shoot bracketed images that can later be combined into a single High Dynamic Range image. We will also cover how to use a variety of different lenses and techniques to create unique images you will be thrilled to show off and hang on your wall! \n  \nThis trek is for photographers of all skill levels. Hands-on instruction will be given throughout the workshop. A tripod is a necessity. Beyond that\, no special gear is required. Polarizer and lens hoods for each lens used is recommended. You’ll need plenty of space on your memory cards for all the creative images you’ll be capturing! \nThere will be a brief pre-trek class via zoom on February 3rd\, to go over final details and review images of what can be expected and tons of tips to get you started. An email will be sent to participants approximately one week prior to the event with all the details. \nAdmission to the museum is included in the price!  There is a minimum number of participants needed to run this trek. Participants will meet at the museum \nThe Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is located at 85 S Walnut St\, Boyertown\, PA \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:America On Wheels Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Let’s escape the winter blues and get out and create great images at one of Pennsylvania’s premier automotive museums! \nJoin us for a fun and fascinating trek to the America On Wheels transportation museum in Allentown\, PA. Learn about the rich history of automotive transportation\, as you take a photographic tour of 2 floors packed full of history and highly photogenic automotive displays. Antique and vintage automobiles – and the displays that are part of their history\, provide colorful and creative subjects to photograph. Whether you are an automobile enthusiast or not\, you will be fascinated by the museum’s collection and inspired to create unique and compelling images you will love! It’s not as much about the cars\, bikes or trucks themselves\, as it is about learning to see and compose more creatively and capture unique images no matter where you are. \n  \nThis trek is for beginners and more advanced photo enthusiasts who want to learn to go beyond the normal snapshot\, understand their cameras in a more comprehensive way\, and learn how to use the fundamentals of photography-aperture\, shutter speeds\, ISO\, focus point and more to create truly artistic images! We will work with whatever gear you own\, but a tripod\, mid-range zoom\, super wide angle lens and even macro lens are best suited for this event. A circular polarizer and lens hood for each lens you bring will also be useful. \n  \nA pre-trek Zoom class will be held prior to the event. This class will run approximately one hour. We will review all the info you will need to be prepared for a fantastic and fun event. Info covered will be an overview of the museum and several displays. (Please note that museum displays periodically change\, so some of the images you see may not represent what is currently on display). We will review gear suggestions and recommendations and spend a good amount of time discussing creative compositions\, white balance\, how to best expose in the lower light of the museum-which will also have bright windows and lights\, and also creative use of aperture and focus point. We will also discuss the benefit of exposure bracketing and shooting HDR images. The pre-trek class also allows for more time shooting on location\, as well as greater social distancing as we continue to navigate the COVID 19 pandemic. \nPlease note: The museum has requested that all visitor’s wear a mask. You must be willing to comply with any and all COVID policies to participate. \nThe number of attendees is kept small in order to provide as much hands-on feedback as possible. Valerie will be working with individuals during the entire workshop to help you in every possible way to come away with images you’ll love. \nWorkshop runs from 10am to 2pm. We will meet at the museum at the main entrance just before the museum opens at 10. \nAmerica On Wheels is located at: 5 North Front Street\, Allentown\, PA 18102. \nAdmission to museum is INCLUDED  in workshop fee. In case of inclement weather\, we will reschedule to Saturday January 29\, 2022\, same time.

SUMMARY:Airplane and Auto Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:For those that love the creative challenge and fun of capturing unique images of rusty things-this is the place for you! According to Jersey’s Best Magazine\, “this quirky junkyard is a part-picking’ paradise\, giving vintage machines new life as movie props. Scenes from the 80s hit movie Eddie and the Cruisers were filmed here\, although the remnants from the film have long since been buried. Planes and helicopters tower atop buses\, while old car carcasses rest among sprouting shrubs.” Aircraft are stacked throughout the 12 acre property\, including an amazing array of their pieces and parts.  \n\n\n\nJoin me as we photographically explore an airplane and automotive graveyard in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey. In cooperation with Richard Lewis Photography\, our group will have the place all to ourselves! We will begin the adventure with a Zoom presentation from Richard\, with photos and info to get you excited and ready to go. When we arrive\, we will be taken on a tour throughout the grounds\, so you know where all the cool stuff is. You will also have a map to help you find your way around. Instruction will be provided before and throughout the trek on how to best compose creative compositions out of the chaos. Tips on exposure\, focusing\, lens choice\, and creative options such as shooting artistic HDR images will be given. You can use any gear you have. Lenses in the range of super wide-angle to 200mm-even macro lenses will work great here. There are so many colors\, shapes\, and textures to play with-you will be amazed! \n\n\n\nThe workshop fee covers your entrance fee\, the pre-trek class\, hands-on instruction during the workshop and a post processing workshop that will take place via Zoom soon after the event. All participants will be invited to a private Facebook group for workshop attendees to share images and stories. \n\n\n\nLiability releases will need to be signed by all participants before entering the grounds. They will be sent to you\, along with the address and all the details for the event after registration. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will run from 9am to 1pm and is rain or shine-unless it is unsafe to be out. \n\n\n\nAlso\, for an added bonus-we will also be photographing the day before at another undisclosed auto salvage yard. See post for November 6th for more details. Join us for a full weekend of abandoned and more! \n\n\n\nSee special COVID terms and conditions

SUMMARY:9/11 Tribute In Lights Photo Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Tribute in Light is an art installation created in remembrance of the September 11 attacks. It consists of 88 vertical searchlights arranged in two columns of light to represent the Twin Towers. It stands six blocks south of the World Trade Center on top of the Battery Parking Garage in New York City. Tribute in Light began as a temporary commemoration of the attacks in early 2002\, but it became an annual event\, currently produced on September 11 by the Municipal Art Society of New York. \n\n\n\nOn clear nights\, the lights can be seen from over 60 miles (97 km) away\, visible in all of New York City and most of suburban Northern New Jersey and Long Island.  Each year\, about 30 technicians\, electricians\, and stagehands work for about ten days to install the lights. During a testing phase of several days\, observers in Brooklyn\, Staten Island\, New Jersey\, and uptown Manhattan help make sure that the beams are adjusted accurately. The lights shine from dusk to dawn. \n\n\n\nMy first experience of seeing the Tribute lights shining over Manhattan was in 2020. It was awe-inspiring and very moving. Most of us remember where we were when we first heard about the attacks\, and we sat speechless\, glued to the television for days and weeks as rescue efforts took place around the clock. Never forget. What a wonderful way to honor all those who lost their lives and those who worked so hard to rescue them-than to witness the Tribute In Light in person. \n\n\n\nIf you love capturing the beauty of cityscapes at night-or would love to learn\, then join us for this breathtaking photographic event. \n\n\n\nWe will photograph the skyline from several locations in New Jersey. We will likely also visit the Teardrop Memorial-which is also a 9/11 tribute nearby. The group will meet by 6pm to be on location to photograph the New York skyline during the golden hours before during and after sunset. We will continue to shoot through blue hour into dark. Specific details for where we meet and photograph from will be sent to participants after registration. \n\n\n\nInstruction will be shared throughout the event on how to expose for tricky lighting conditions-especially as it gets dark\, when camera meters are no longer able to give accurate exposure readings. Instruction will also be given on composition\, creative long exposures\, and how best to convey such a moving and meaningful scene. Event will be great for beginners as well as more advanced enthusiasts. Participants should come with a decent understanding of their camera gear\, and be comfortable with changing basic settings-especially in darker environments. An informational email\, as well as Zoom meeting will be held prior to the Photo Walk. \n\n\n\nRegistration will be limited and will likely fill fast. Don’t wait to sign up to join us for this inaugural event!

SUMMARY:Chanticleer Gardens Photo Walk
DESCRIPTION:Within 30 minutes of Philadelphia\, Chanticleer is one of the great gardens of the region. Chanticleer has been called the most romantic\, imaginative\, and exciting public garden in America. The garden is a study of textures and forms\, where foliage trumps flowers\, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. The Chanticleer Foundation owns 47 acres\, 35 of which are open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we spend the early evening hours exploring the gardens and making beautiful images in new and creative ways. We will work with a variety of lenses and focal lengths to fully explore how to capture the grand landscape as well as the intricate details of the gardens. Bring whatever lenses you have and learn how to use them to their fullest creative capability. Instruction will be given on how to work with fill flash\, reflectors and diffusers to creatively control the light. We will also discuss the use of filters to enhance and saturate colors\, and a few other creative techniques along the way. Detailed instructions will be given on how to best compose your images for the greatest visual impact. There will also be plenty of instruction on which aperture and shutter speed combinations to use to best convey the mood of the scene. A lens hood and circular polarizer are highly recommended for each lens\, as well as a tripod\, cable release and plenty of memory cards. Workshop is for beginners as well as more advanced enthusiasts. Specific details will be emailed upon registration. \n\n\n\nA minimum number of participants is needed to run this workshop. Group will be kept small to allow for greater individual assistance. A detailed email will be sent out 7-10 days prior to the workshop to help you prepare. SUMMARY:Photographing Night Skies
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever stood beneath a starry sky and viewed the amazing array of celestial bodies\, such as the Milky Way\, a comet\, a meteor shower and even the moon? Do you dream of being able to capture images of the night skies\, or did you look at photos and think\, I could never do that? Maybe you’ve even tried and come away with images that were less than pleasing? Maybe you’ve just been afraid to try? Or maybe\, you just had no idea how to go about getting started. \n\n\n\nIf that’s you\, then join us for a learning opportunity designed just for you!  \n\n\n\nWe will begin with an approximately two hour (online) class that will go through everything you need to know to get started in astrophotography. We will discuss gear choices and the difference they can make\, when to go out in search of specific subjects in the sky\, how to locate them\, and how to easily capture them to create amazing images of your own. We will specifically discuss how to photograph the moon\, stars\, star trails\, and the Milky Way. Detailed information will be given on composition\, exposure settings\, dealing with the problem of digital noise\, focusing to get sharp stars and more! \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss how to prepare for success using useful apps\, such as Clear Skies\, Star Walk\, Photo Pills and The Photographers Ephemeris. Though this will not be a class on all that these apps can do\, you will gain an understanding of the simple tools that will help you to determine what day and what time of day to go out\, what to avoid\, how to decide where to set up to shoot\, and more. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPre-trek class details: Due to time constraints and challenging schedules\, the class will be pre-recorded and be available to watch beginning Friday August 6th. A live follow-up Zoom mtg will take place on Tuesday August 10\, at 7pm\, for participants to ask any questions they may have prior to the photo trek. In order to help participants best prepare\, the class is mandatory for attending the actual photo trek\, and will help minimize confusion on location in the dark. The Zoom meeting is not mandatory\, but is offered to any questions from the class. Feel free to contact me with any questions\, comments or concerns.  \n\n\n\nThe location shoot will take place at French Creek State Park\, and will begin at 7:30pm and last to approximately 11pm. This will provide the opportunity to photograph the sunset and then allow plenty of time to get set up for photographing the skies. French Creek is one of the darkest areas in southeast PA\, and offers the ability to safely and conveniently gather as a group for a great learning opportunity. Exact location and meeting spot will be given upon registration. \n\n\n\nDate for workshop is set to coincide with the peak of the Perseids Meteor show \n\n\n\nThe photo trek will be held on Saturday August 14\, 2021 from 7:30-11pm\, weather-permitting. In case of rain or extreme cloudiness\, the trek will be rescheduled to Saturday August 20th\, same place and time.  \n\n\n\nPlease note special protective measures that will be in place throughout the in-person trek. \n\n\n\nUpdated Terms & Conditions – Valerie A Hoffman Photography (June 2020) \n\n\n\nYour safety and well-being are of the utmost importance to me. As we begin to navigate the reopening of business in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic\, the following updated policies are being put in place to protect the health and wellbeing of all workshop attendees\, as well as those who we will come in contact with during events. \n\n\n\nI will be following and adhering to state and CDC mandates going forward until we are clear of the threat of spreading the virus. \n\n\n\nThat being said\, here is what you need to know and comply with: \n\n\n\nAnyone who is sick with COVID like symptoms or has a fever over 100 degrees must not attend the event. Amount paid may be put towards a future workshop\, or can be refunded in full if notice is given in advance. Suggest checking your temperature BEFORE leaving home.Face Masks – Not currently mandated but are encouraged whenever you are in close (6 foot) proximity of other participants. When you are apart from others\, you may remove the mask.Workshop participants will be limited to a smaller than usual numberIndoor classes will also be limited in attendance based on the venue\, so participants can be seated the appropriate distance apart\n\n\n\n*Please note that this is a fluid situation and may change based on governmental directives\, CDC recommendations and legal advisement \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

SUMMARY:Jenkins Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is one of eastern Pennsylvania’s great horticultural and environmental assets. As a botanical garden\, the Arboretum maintains a collection of trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers and ferns in a tranquil\, naturalistic landscape. In addition\, the Arboretum features a diverse collection of rhododendrons and azaleas from around the world. The unique landscape and diverse plant collections provide sanctuary for a variety of birds\, insects and other wildlife. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we capture the beauty of spring blooms in one of the most intimate yet lesser known gardens in the area. Winding wooded paths weave through gorgeous azalea blooms\, where the colors will mesmerize you as you capture amazing images. Meeting in the morning will provide the best light to capture the beauty of the landscape. We will focus on the intimate details\, as well as the grander view of the gardens\, using a variety of techniques. Special attention will be given to composition\, exposure and lens choice\, as well as how to use different lenses to control perspective and direct the viewer’s eye. We will work with reflectors to help control the light\, and other useful accessories. A detailed email will be sent to all participants prior to the trek. Feel free to contact me with any questions prior to the event. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for beginners\, as well as more advanced enthusiasts. No special equipment is required. SUMMARY:Pennhurst Asylum Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Pennhurst was an institution for the mentally and physically disabled individuals of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Constructed and opened in 1908 as a state school for the mentally and physically disabled\, Pennhurst’s property was vast\, covering 120 acres. Created to house over 10\,000 patients\, Pennhurst was one of the largest institutions of its kind in Pennsylvania. It was devoted strictly to the care\, treatment and education of the disabled. Originally named Pennhurst Home for the Feeble Minded and Epileptic\, it finally was just called Pennhurst State School. After a decade of controversy\, it closed on December 9\, 1987.  \n\n\n\nPennhurst fell into complete ruin as the complex was shut down. Buildings were abandoned as they were\, with patient’s clothes and belonging strewn about. Furniture\, cabinets and medical equipment were left to decay as if someone had just got up and walked out the front door. This is the place that will eventually resurrect into one of the most studied properties in the ghost hunter media\, and will become an amazing haunted attraction. Join us as we photographically explore this remarkable and eerie place! \n\n\n\nWe will have access to the Mayflower building and several tunnels\, as well as touring the grounds(with guides). A brief history will be given at the start of the tour\, then we will be free to photograph in specific areas at our leisure. Instruction will be given throughout the workshop on creative composition\, exposure\, flash\, HDR photography\, light painting and more! This will enable you to truly capture the essence of the place. \n\n\n\nA full list of details will be emailed several weeks prior to the event. This workshop is suitable for all levels of photo enthusiasts\, but being familiar with the settings on your camera is highly recommended. You will be shooting in very low light conditions\, so a sturdy tripod is a must. Physically\, you need to be able to be on your feet and move up and down several flights of stairs for up to four hours. The buildings are not heated or air conditioned\, and are in a state of arrested decay. Liability waivers will need to be signed for both Pennhurst and Valerie A Hoffman Photography. \n\n\n\nWorkshop fee includes Zoom informational instruction prior to the event\, tour and access to the building and grounds-as permitted by Pennhurst\, and an editing class after the trek. The pre-trek class will cover details of the area\, recommended gear\, how to properly expose for creative images\, creative composition\, light painting and more. The post-trek editing class will cover basic and creative edits in AdobeLightroom Classic\, and how to edit your bracketed images into cool HDR images using Photomatix Pro. This software is simple to use and gives you the ability to create artistic images with ease. If you do not own this software\, a trial version can be downloaded for free\, and a discount code will be given during the class for those interested in purchasing it.

SUMMARY:Landscape Photography Photo Trek
DESCRIPTION:Usually at this time of year\, we have a great macro photography event at Longwood Gardens during their annual Orchid Extravaganza. This year the Orchid Event did not take place for a variety of reasons due to the on-going pandemic. In addition\, the new “No Tripods Indoors COVID Policy” would make a macro photography event that much more challenging-if not impossible. BUT\, I’m really tired of the cold\, gray days of winter\, and am ready to focus on spring! I know many of you are right there with me\, so… we’re mixing it up a little. Instead of focusing on the intimate tiny details of flowers\, we will instead focus on the bigger picture-the amazing overall beauty of the gardens\, capturing the grand landscape. INDOORS. In the warmth\, surrounded by the beauty of spring flowers. \n\n\n\nInstruction will be given on how to best capture beautiful images that include drama and depth. We will discuss the impact aperture choice and depth of field have on your images\, how and where to focus within the scene\, creative composition\, controlling exposure-especially in harsh lighting situations\, using filters for greater impact and color depth\, and so much more. You won’t want to miss this new opportunity! \n\n\n\nDue to COVID policies and out of an abundance of caution\, the number of participants will be limited. Also\, in order to help facilitate the learning process while social distancing\, there will be a pre-trek class held on Zoom\, approximately one week prior to the event. During the class we will go through recommended gear and how to properly use it to enhance your images. We will also review a variety of images to help inspire and get your creative juices flowing\, while teaching important techniques on lens choice\, composition\, exposure\, depth of field and more. Several creative techniques will also be demonstrated\, such as creating great bokeh backgrounds\, in camera multiple exposures\, zoom bursts\, shoot-thrus\, exposure bracketing\, and more-all without the use of a tripod! This class will be recorded and available to if class date does not coincide with your schedule. \n\n\n\nThis trek will be great for beginners as well as more advanced photo enthusiasts. A prior understanding of your camera will be helpful\, as this will not be a specific lesson on any one camera but on appropriate settings which all cameras that are able to be set manually will have. \n\n\n\nSince having Timed Tickets IN ADVANCE is the only way to gain access to the gardens\, and due to the limited amount of spots available on this workshop\, it is highly recommended that you sign up as soon as possible in order to get your ticket at the time the group will be entering\, and to reserve your spot.
