Join us as we photographically explore the beauty and intricate delicateness of a wide variety of flowers and plants. We will spend the morning photographing exclusively in the conservatory. The emphasis on this Trek will be all aspects of Macro photography. We will discuss white balance, exposure and depth of field, overcoming focusing challenges with Focus Stacking, dealing with contrasty light, use of fill flash, best practices for close up photography, creative composition, gear choices and more! We will also explore how to take your creative possibilities to a new level with In-Camera Double Exposures.

Working with whatever camera gear you have, you will receive hands-on instruction and feedback, as well as learn in a fun and friendly environment. A tripod and close focusing lens are highly recommended for this Trek. A detailed email will sent about a week prior to the event with everything you will need to know.

Admission to the gardens is not included in the cost of the workshop. In case of inclement winter weather, we will reschedule for Saturday, February 1st.

I have been to Longwood Gardens with Val instructing twice now. Once with the Water Lilies and once with the Orchids! I loved both Treks. The group size is limited so you have the chance to ask one on one questions with Val! I’ve learned a lot the first time I went (the water lilies) about Macro Photography. When I went the second time with the Orchids I had some of the basic down that I was able to try some more artistic techniques!! I can’t wait to go again!!

Longwood Gardens is a beautiful place with so many beautiful flowers and arrangements to view. The Orchid Extravaganza Trek held by Valerie really allows you to slow down and create beautiful images to take home. She is skilled in seeing beyond just a “pretty flower”. She guides you in your creative vision and steps up your technique.
I highly recommend this class. If flowers aren’t your thing but learning is, look into investing in another trek!

I have been on many Longwood Gardens treks with Val. I have learned and continue to learn how to see things differently, because Val would suggest: what if you shot from this angle? Val is a wonderful teacher and enjoys sharing her knowledge. I look forward to her next trek.

Another great trek to Longwood for their orchid extravaganza. This trek was focusing on macro photography. Val gave suggestions not only on technical aspects but also being creative. Each trek is always a great learning opportunity. I try to attend as many treks as possible.

Fantastic trek! I have been on multiple Longwood Treks and this one was one of my favorite. The focus was on macro/close up. Val was great helping with composition tips as well as what to look for as a background (w/out distractions). I was very happy with the images I came away with. I would recommend for any photographer with an interest in flower and/or macro photography from beginner to advanced!
